The Raven King (season 8)

Perhaps the most unexpected twist of Game of Thrones’ final season was Bran Stark becoming the new king of Westeros. After spending seasons as the Three-Eyed Raven saying that he could never have a title or claim again, Bran steps in to reign over the Seven Kingdoms — or more accurately, Six Kingdoms, after Sansa successfully pleas for the North’s independence.

After years wearing heavy furs and nothing else, Bran’s attire changes drastically after becoming king. But even though Bran’s kingly clothing is far more flattering than the furs, it’s still very simple for a monarch. After he’s chosen to rule Westeros, he dons a black suede outfit with a handsome mantle that makes him look regal enough to sit on the throne — but it’s lacking the embellishments that the wealthy lords and ladies so often associate with power. And that’s exactly the point.

Bran’s rule represents a much-needed change in the governance of Westeros, one meant to take power out of the hands of tyrants and corrupt rulers and place it in the hands of those who will work for the people. Bran himself is merely a symbol of monarchy, but Tyrion and the rest of Bran’s council will work to ensure the stability of the kingdoms over which he reigns. Similarly, Bran’s costume is symbolic of the fact that he doesn’t genuinely care about the power that comes with being king. It’s why he lacks a crown and the adornments that the others have.
