The nominations for the 2020 Grammys are out, and Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi has gotten a nod for his work on the eighth and final season of the show.

Specifically, he’s nominated in the category of Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. He was also nominated in this category a couple years back for his work on Game of Thrones season 7, but lost to Justin Hurwitz, who was up for his work on La La Land. Here’s what Djawadi’s competition looks like this time:

  • Avengers: Endgame (Alan Silvestri)
  • Chernobyl (Hildur Guðnadóttir)
  • Game of Thrones: Season 8 (Ramin Djawadi)
  • The Lion King (Hans Zimmer)
  • Mary Poppins Returns (Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman)

I think Djawadi has a good chance in this field. His compositions for season 8 were terrific, including chilling pieces like “The Night King.”

And if the voters don’t think that was enough, this would be the perfect time to honor Djawadi for all the work he’s done on the show for the past eight seasons. From the main theme to “Goodbye Brother” “The Rains of Castamere”to “The Light of the Seven,” I’d say he’s more than earned that statue. I’ll be rooting for him when the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards air on January 26, 2020.

And that’s not the only Djawadi news to be going around lately. There’s also word that he may have been brought on board to score The Eternals, one of Marvel’s big tentpole movies for 2020, and a key pillar in the fourth phase of its Marvel Cinematic Universe. If so, it would be a good fit, since The Eternals also stars Game of Thrones veterans Kit Harington and Richard Madden.

Plus, Djawadi helped kick off the MCU by writing the score to Iron Man way back in 2008 (he was also nominated for a Grammy for that, but lost to James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer’s score for The Dark Knight). This would be a nice full circle moment.
