Noah Hawley to write and direct Star Trek 4, Chris Pine to return as Kirk

Noah Hawley — who created, wrote and directed popular FX shows Legion and Fargo — is in talks with Paramount Pictures to write and direct the embattled fourth Star Trek film, according to Deadline. Chris Pine (Captain Kirk) is expected to return to the franchise along with the cast of the cast of Trek 3…if they can settle their salary dispute with Paramount, that is.

The sequel to Star Trek: Beyond (2016), Trek 4’s troubles began earlier this year when it was revealed that Paramount was asking Pine and Chris Hemsworth — who played Kirk’s father in 2009’s Star Trek  — to take a salary cut. They weren’t having it, so the movie was shelved. It was unfortunate, but at least fans still had Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access to look forward to.

Apparently, the script for the as-yet-untitled Trek 4 had Kirk traveling through time and reconnecting with his father, George. I don’t know if Hawley is allowed to go back to the drawing board, but I hope he scrap that idea, because time travel in Star Trek is like every important person in Star Wars being a Skywalker; it’s old and tired.

If it can reunite the crew from Star Trek 3, Paramount will have put together quite the team, many of whom have gone on to huge success elsewhere. Pine made an impression in Wonder Woman, and is starring in the sequel, while Hemsworth and Zoe Saldana (Uhura) made huge names for themselves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Thor and Gamora respectively.

Anton Yelchin (Chekov) tragically died in 2016. Otherwise, Zachary Quinto (Spock), Karl Urban (Leonard McCoy), Simon Pegg (Montgomery Scott) and John Cho (Hikaru Sulu) should all hopefully be on board.
