Superhero show Stargirl to air on both DC Universe and The CW
Somewhat unexpectedly, the CW has announced that both it and the DC Universe streaming platform will be airing the new DC-based Stargirl series, expected to premiere in the second quarter of 2020. The CW will air each Stargirl episode one day after it premieres on DC Universe.
Produced by Greg Berlanti, the Stargirl TV show is based on the character of the same name from DC Comics. Teenager Courtney Whitmore, aka Stargirl is played by American actor Brec Bassinger (Bella and the Bulldogs). It also features Henry Thomas (E.T.), Lou Ferrigno Jr. (S.W.A.T.), Christopher James Baker (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Meg DeLacy (The Fosters), Amy Smart (Felicity) and Luke Wilson (That 70’s Show).
Stargirl follows Courtney as she relocates to a new high school in Blue Valley, Nebraska. The move is spurred by her mom’s remarriage to Pat Dugan (Wilson), whom Courtney soon discovers was once a member of the Justice League of America named Stripesy, the mechanically-gifted sidekick to Starman (Joel McHale). Armed with Starman’s Cosmic Staff, Courtney joins the JLA as Stargirl, with her stepfather Pat returning to the fray as well, bringing with him his powerful robot named ‘Stripes.’

The Stargirl character (originally known as ‘The Star-Spangled Kid’ and often referred to as ‘Star,’ or ‘Stars’) is no stranger to the CW; she appeared on Smallville (portrayed by Britt Irvin) and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (played by Sarah Grey). Comic books creator Geoff Johns based the character on his sister Courtney, who perished in an airplane crash in 1996.
Although her own show isn’t coming for a while, Stargirl will debut during the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths event planned for the CW’s Arrowverse shows.
