His Dark MaterialsWatchmen and The Mandalorian are currently tearing up our screens, with The Witcher just around the corner. The fantasy wars are on, and it’s time we look forward to the next battlefront. Before long, we’ll be taking in The Lord of the RingsThe Wheel of Time and House of the Dragon. It’s heady days.

Also in the running is The Nevers, an upcoming series from Joss Whedon, the guy behind Buffy the Vampire SlayerFirefly, and The Avengers. Set in Victorian London, it tells the story of a group of women — possibly known as the Nevers, I don’t know — “who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.” Basically, it’s women with superpowers saving the world while battling against a repressive society. It’s peak Whedon.

The Nevers is filming as we speak, although we won’t see it until 2021. The cast is vast, with well-known names like Nick Frost starring alongside Whedon standbys like Olivia Williams. HBO programming president Casey Bloys talked ever-so-briefly about the show when debuting the HBO Max streaming service a few weeks back:

That presentation also included some official artwork for the series, although it’s hard to know if this is what we’ll see when the show premieres in a couple of years:

We’ve got a Victorian woman, complete with ruffled shoulders and a hat, in silhouette to the left of the logo. “They’re coming,” reads the tagline. In the upper right-hand corner, we have some gears and blue bolts of electricity. Our understanding and use of electricity leapt forward during the Victorian era. Might it play into how the Nevers got their powers? Or maybe it was just something steampunk-y to throw on the poster.

In other Nevers news, The London Times is reporting that star Olivia Williams has signed a five-year contract for the show, suggesting that Whedon intends it to run for a while. Does The Nevers have what it takes to play with the big dogs? Stay tuned.
