Game of Thrones has more spinoff potential than any other show, according to science
This may already be obvious to fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, as well as fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones, but now we have research to back it up. According to a new study by Parrot Analytics, Thrones is prime for spinoffs and sequels, far more than most shows they look at. Despite the recent cancellation of a spinoff to be set in the distant past of Westeros, that’s good news for fans looking for more of what the show gave them.
The Parrot study explored the concepts of longevity and “franchisability,” concluding that Game of Thrones boasts the highest rankings in both categories. The company defined “franchisability” as whether or not a show has a high potential for further spin-offs and content within the world it set up, while longetivity measures how audience demand for a series has held up over time.
“Spin-off shows are a long industry tradition,” said Parrot Analytics CEO Wared Seger. “But for each success, there are many failed spin-offs. How can we assess whether spin-offs are the right move for HBO? Using our franchisability metric, we found that Game of Thrones has 227 times more spin-off potential than the average show.”
Given the detail of the world and history behind Game of Thrones, it makes sense that the show would rank highly when it comes to the possibility of creating spinoffs. The bloody history of House Targaryen and the mysterious background of the White Walkers are just two prequel concepts that have been explored, with HBO going ahead with a show about the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons: House of the Dragon. But that’s just scratching the surface. The potential for new stories set in Westeros and beyond is nearly endless.
And what about sequels? Many of our favorite characters concluded their time on Game of Thrones still alive, meaning they could potentially come back down the line, though whether the actors would ever return is another story. Arya went off to discover what’s west of Westeros, Sansa began her reign as Queen in the North, and Jon started a new life beyond the wall. Any of these storylines could be explored in further depth, as could Bran’s reign and the future of Westeros in general.
And given that Game of Thrones remains in high demand, it’s likely we’ll see more spinoffs than just House of the Dragon. Let’s just hope the new stories live up to the original.
