AFI honors Game of Thrones as one the year’s most significant shows
By Ariba Bhuvad
Game of Thrones season 8 made it onto the American Film Institute’s list of top ten shows deemed “culturally and artistically representative of this year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image,” according to Deadline. In fact, HBO had a total of five shows on the 2019 list, crowding out other players like Netflix and FX. Check it out below!
- Chernobyl (HBO)
- The Crown (Netflix)
- Fosse/Verdon (FX)
- Game of Thrones (HBO)
- Pose (FX)
- Succession (HBO)
- Unbelievable (Netflix)
- Veep (HBO)
- Watchmen (HBO)
- When They See Us (Netflix)
Having watched most of these shows, I couldn’t have put together a better list to represent the best of television during this past year. Each of these shows was riveting and intriguing in its own way, so it comes as no surprise. If you’re looking for something new to watch, this is a great place to start!
Speaking of acknowledgments, Game of Thrones recently won three Clio Awards for its final season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What are the Clio Awards, you ask? Don’t worry, we got you. Or rather, Wikipedia does. “The Clio Awards is an annual award program that recognizes innovation and creative excellence in advertising, design and communication, as judged by an international panel of advertising professionals.” And there you have it.
So the awards are given to the ad campaigns rather than the show itself. Two Game of Thrones campaigns won top honors, which you can check out below.
Category: Television/Streaming: Integrated Campaign. Winner: “For The Throne.”
Category: Television/Streaming: Partnerships & Collaborations. Winner: “Joust.” This would be the famous Game of Thrones Super Bowl Bud Light commercial:
