Awards season is around the bend, and the final season of Game of Thrones is very much in the running! After taking home 12 Emmys earlier this year, it’s time to see what other hardware the show can win.
Let’s start with the Critics’ Choice Awards, where the show is up for a variety of awards:
Best Drama Series
- The Crown (Netflix)
- David Makes Man (OWN)
- Game of Thrones (HBO)
- The Good Fight (CBS All Access)
- Pose (FX)
- Succession (HBO)
- This Is Us (NBC)
- Watchmen (HBO)
Best Actor in a Drama Series
- Sterling K. Brown – This Is Us (NBC)
- Mike Colter – Evil (CBS)
- Paul Giamatti – Billions (Showtime)
- Kit Harington – Game of Thrones (HBO)
- Freddie Highmore – The Good Doctor (ABC)
- Tobias Menzies – The Crown (Netflix)
- Billy Porter – Pose (FX)
- Jeremy Strong – Succession (HBO)
Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
- Asante Blackk – This Is Us (NBC)
- Billy Crudup – The Morning Show (Apple)
- Asia Kate Dillon – Billions (Showtime)
- Peter Dinklage – Game of Thrones (HBO)
- Justin Hartley – This Is Us (NBC)
- Delroy Lindo – The Good Fight (CBS All Access)
- Tim Blake Nelson – Watchmen (HBO)
Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
- Helena Bonham Carter – The Crown (Netflix)
- Gwendoline Christie – Game of Thrones (HBO)
- Laura Dern – Big Little Lies (HBO)
- Audra McDonald – The Good Fight (CBS All Access)
- Jean Smart – Watchmen (HBO)
- Meryl Streep – Big Little Lies (HBO)
- Susan Kelechi Watson – This Is Us (NBC)
It’s a nice surprise to see Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) in the mix! She was pretty psyched about it, too:
Very excited to see Christie on the docket, although I would have liked to see Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) get some recognition.
Anyway, Game of Thrones has a decent-but-not-amazing reputation at the Critics’ Choice Awards, having won Best Drama Series twice but nothing else. Other TV shows with a lot of nominations include When They See Us, This Is Us and Schitt’s Creek. On the movie side of things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Little Women and Marriage Story all got multiple nominations.
The 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards will air on January 12 on The CW.
Let’s move on to the Golden Globes, where Game of Thrones picked up only one nomination:
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
- Brian Cox, Succession
- Kit Harington, Game of Thrones
- Rami Malek, Mr. Robot
- Tobias Menzies, The Crown
- Billy Porter, Pose
This is low even by the standards of the Golden Globes, which has never been wild about the show — Peter Dinklage is the only person involved with Game of Thrones to ever win a Golden Globe, in the Best Supporting Actor category for his work in the very first season. Beyond that, the series has gone completely unrewarded over the years, with a minimum of nominations.
And will no one recognize Clarke?

Instead, on the television side, shows with a lot of nominations include Chernobyl, The Crown and Unbelievable. Also doing pretty well are Barry, Big Little Lies, Fleabag, Fosse/Verdon, The Kominsky Method, The Morning Show and Succession. In movie-land, Marriage Story, The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker and The Two Popes all came away with an armful of nominations.
The 77th Annual Golden Globes will air on NBC on January 5.
