Former Game of Thrones actor Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon) is starring in director Sam Mendes’ World War I movie, 1917. The film opens on December 25, and will follow Lance Corporal Blake (Chapman) as he and another soldier race to deliver a warning message to a battalion of British soldiers who are about to walk into an ambush.
Of particular interest to Game of Thrones fans is that Richard Madden (Robb Stark) plays Chapman’s brother. So it’s the alternate reality Lannister-Baratheon meeting you never knew you wanted.
Chapman talked to Variety about his preparation for the movie — which was filmed to look like one continuous shot — and at one point the conversation turned to his time on Game of Thrones, as it tends to do whenever a former cast member gives an interview. Chapman recalled a memorable interaction he once had with a completely reasonable fan.
“He was like, ‘I really hate you. I want to punch you in the face,’” Chapman remembered. “And my mates were like, ‘Whoa whoa whoa.'”
I’m not sure why any fan would want to assault Chapman. I mean, Tommen Baratheon was the sweetest boy-king to ever rule the Seven Kingdoms, even if he was duped into siding with a bunch of religious zealots over his own family. Maybe the guy was confusing him with Jack Gleeson, who played Joffrey?
Not that it’s okay to want to assault Jack Gleeson, obviously, but at least I could follow the loopy logic better.
So what’s next for Chapman, once the hype surrounding 1917 eventually dies down? “I would like to do a western,” he said. “I’d like to go back farther into time. Wear a cowboy hat, ride a horse, shoot some people. I’d like that.”
Quick, someone call Westworld, we’ve got a great Game of Thrones crossover in mind.
