The fourth book in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive gets a release date
By Daniel Roman
Great news for fans of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive: Tor has announced that the fourth book in the series will be released on November 17, 2020!
Said Sanderson in a statement:
"It has been almost twenty years since I first outlined The Stormlight Archive. Back then, I didn’t think anyone would be interested in this crazy epic I’d devised–and it’s been so thrilling to see enthusiasm for it grow to such heights over the years. Book four finally gets to one of the foundational scenes I conceived from the beginning. In fact, it might be the very first big scene I imagined, and my favorite in the entire series. A part of me can’t believe people are finally going to be able to read it. Less than one year now! Life before death, Radiants."
Set on the storm-swept planet of Roshar, The Stormlight Archive focuses on an order of magical warriors called the Knights Radiant as they try to defend humanity from the deadly Voidbringers. But, as with any of Sanderson’s works, things are never as cut and dry as they seem. Volume three, Oathbringer, left the world of Roshar in a pretty precarious place, with a lot of the preconceived notions about its history being challenged. It also marked the middle point in Stormlight’s first five-book arc, so we can expect some pretty major stuff to go down in the next volume.
The progress bar on Sanderson’s website (yes, he has a progress bar—eat your heart out, Winds of Winter hopefuls) puts his rough draft of The Stormlight Archive at 90% complete, which is enough that Tor felt comfortable making this announcement. Sanderson also regularly posts updates on Reddit about the book’s progress. Be warned: there are some mild spoilers in there…but if you’re one of those people who’s been itching to see what Kaladin, Shallan and Dalinar have been up to since 2017, they’re worth checking out.
We also don’t have a title quite yet, although it’s been rumored to be called Rhythm of War. For now, it’s time to rejoice!
