Katheryn Winnick bids goodbye to Vikings, takes home cool props from set
The sixth and final season of Vikings is underway, and if the first two episodes are any indication, fans are in for a treat as favorite characters embark on new journeys. For instance, we have Katheryn Winnick’s Lagertha finally hanging up her sword and shield for a peaceful life of farming…for now.
Speaking to People, the 41-year-old Canadian actor described what it felt like on her final day of filming. “I don’t think it really even hit me,” she said. “I’m flying back to L.A. and as I’m sitting and waiting for the rest of the boarding to take place, the steward comes up to me. She’s like, ‘Are you okay?’ And I don’t know even how to describe it ideally, just busted out in tears.”
"And the only thing I could say is, ‘Goodbye.’ It seemed like someone passed away. And she really thought it was some deep family member, or that. … And it was just, it was like that. It’s hard to even articulate that, I’m saying goodbye to a show."
At least Winnick took home some very cool souvenirs from the set. “I got Lagertha’s sword,” she said. “It’s a good one. Also, her very first armor. It’s the very first one, is done by Calvin, who’s a close friend of mine in Ireland. He’s such a great brother craftsmanship and just to have her armor, her battlefield outfit.”
She also took home her character’s shield, which was signed by the entire cast. But that’s not all, she was also given a horn that had Lagertha’s journey written on it, as well as a poem from Vikings creator/writer Michael Hirst.

People also asked Winnick if she would be part of the spinoff, Vikings: Vahalla, a Netflix series that will take place 100 years after the events of Vikings. “I would love to be involved,” Winnick said. “I don’t know if it’s coming back and just being a part, either as an actor or a director or something like that, or just coming in and having a pint with my crew members, whatever it is, it’s my family back there.”
New episodes of Vikings air every Wednesday on History, at 9:00 p.m. EST.
