Amazon’s very expensive Lord of the Rings prequel show will take place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, a period that lasted 3,441 years, beginning with the banishment of Morgoth and ending with the defeat of Sauron’s army by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. There’s a lot of possible content in there, and we still know very little of what the show will actually be about. All the actors cast so far are playing characters we’ve never heard of. Will any of the people we know from The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit turn up?

The answer, we can finally confirm, is yes. Variety reports that His Dark Materials star Morfydd Clark (she played one of the creepy nurses at Bolvangar) will be playing “young” Galadriel. The character — who was played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson’s movies — is the first legacy character we know of to appear in the series.

With a blonde wig, I can easily see her as Galadriel.

Clark will join Game of Throne star Joseph Mawle (Benjen Stark), who will be the show’s main villain. Markella Kavenagh, Maxim Baldry and Ema Horvath are also part of the cast, while Will Poulter was on board but had to leave for scheduling reasons.

Amazon has already renewed the Lord of the Rings series. We’re already wondering what other legacy characters might be included. Might Elrond make an appearance? Sauron himself? J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium is very rich and detailed, and provides no shortage of suggestions. Galadriel could just be the beginning.

Production should begin in 2020 in New Zealand.
