Clip from Doctor Who season 12 teases sinister plot, Stephen Fry

Doctor Who seems to be taking a creepy, frightening approach for its twelfth season. And if you don’t believe me, then take a look at the newest clip released by BBC America starring the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), her motley crew of companions, and the Stephen Fry.

We’ve seen time and time again in the world of Doctor Who that time can be rewritten and manipulated in a million different ways. But we have yet to see someone’s DNA rewritten. Season 12 is having none of that:

In this clip, Stephen Fry’s character escorts the Doctor and her companions to the bedside of a comatose patient. Apparently, this woman’s DNA has been rewritten to the point where she’s no longer even human, and the implications of whatever happened to her put the safety of the entire planet at risk. Can the Doctor help?

This clip comes from the season’s premiere episode, “Spyfall,” which will air on New Year’s Day. It seems pretty gloomy and sinister, doesn’t it? Cast and crew alike have teased that we have some freaky things coming our way in season 12, and they might start here.

I think we ought to brace ourselves. Something tells me this just might be the show’s biggest, most popular season yet. But time (ha!) will tell.
