Netflix working on an animated Witcher series?

The Witcher is an adaptation of the popular fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, which themselves inspired the even more popular video game series by CD Projekt Red. It’s dropping on Netflix later this year (still don’t know exactly when, weirdly, although there have been rumors), and so far it looks pretty promising:

The show follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a professional monster hunter making his way in a world full of elves, petty lords, powerful magicians and giant bug-eyed terrors who want to claw the eyes out of his head. Again, pretty promising. Other prominent characters include Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), Geralt’s on-again, off-again sorceress love interest, and Ciri (Freya Allan), a young princess who eventually becomes Geralt’s protege in the witching way.

Netflix looks like it’s pushing this show pretty hard (although again, a release date would be nice). And if Recapped is right, they’re more invested than we knew.

A couple words about Recapped: First, they have a perfect record when it comes to Witcher rumors — they were the first to report that Cavill was cast as Geralt and that Chalotra was cast as Yennefer. Second, they’re kinda gross; the purpose of the site is to tell readers where they can see actresses naked onscreen. So maybe don’t click over if you’re at work.

ANYWAY, Recapped reports that, at least at one point, Netflix was working on an animated Witcher series to fill the gap between the first and second seasons of the live-action show. It would featured side characters from the main show, and The Witcher has plenty of those. As Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence points out, that would fit with Netflix’s recent push into animation — between Love, Death & RobotsCuphead, and upcoming series based on Greek and Norse mythology, they’re going all in. (How does that square with Netflix canceling Tuca & Bertie and apparently BoJack Horseman? I don’t know and I’d rather not think about it.)

Redanian Intelligence also mentions actor Helena Klaus, who according to her CV has done voice-over work for The Witcher. Now, the world of The Witcher has enough weird and wild creatures that she could just be talking about the main show, but with the rumor of an animated series in the air, it makes you wonder if there’s more to it.

But we’re probably getting around of ourselves here. I’m looking forward to enjoying the live-action show — whenever it comes out — and then we can talk about supplementary stuff.
