Netflix renews The Witcher for a second season!

The first season of The Witcher, Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy novels, doesn’t come out for a month and change, but showrunner Lauren Hissrich an early bit of good news to share with fans: the show will return for a second season.

Obviously, this is quick, but the show does look really good. Hopefully it’ll please fans of the novels, the video games, and fantasy lovers eager to find something to fill the hole where Game of Thrones used to be.

The image in Hissrich’s post, by the way, is a reference to the two swords carried by lead character Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a professional monster hunter who makes his way around the Continent plying his trade. The silver sword is for monsters. The steel one is for humans, who are ultimately even more dangerous.

And now, a little in-joke for the diehards:

There are eight Witcher books in all. The first season looks like it’ll adapt the first two: The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, both of which are more like short story collections than novels. After that, the Witcher saga proper begins. Hissrich has said she has “seven seasons” of stories to tell with this show, so this early renewal is good news. If The Witcher catches on like I hope it will, it means we won’t have to wait ages before the next season comes along.
