Time and Place

How does The Mandalorian fit into the Star Wars intergalactic timeline? The events of the series take place after the final film of the original trilogy, Return of the Jedi, and before The Force Awakens. Boba Fett is dead and gone, (apparently) swallowed and digested by the Sarlacc, Luke Skywalker is forming his new Jedi Academy, and Kylo Ren is a little kid named Ben Solo.

Series creator Jon Favreau says The Mandalorian‘s story begins five years after the end of Return of the Jedi, nearly 25 years before Supreme Leader Snoke and the First Order really start taking over. This time span is called the “New Republic” era, a period when the post-Empire galaxy is messy and the lawless Outer Rim offers a perfect playground for mercenaries, bounty hunters and pirates.

If you’re not familiar with Star Wars universe timelines, you’ll see the acronyms BBY (“Before the Battle of Yavin”) and ABY (“After the Battle of Yavin”) a lot. Basically, those refer to the times before and after the events of A New Hope, the first Star Wars film that came out in 1977. The Battle of Yavin refers to the destruction of the first Death Star by Luke and company during the Galactic Civil War. The Mandalorian is set in 9 ABY, and The Force Awakens in 34 ABY.
