Who are the Mandalorians?

The Mandalore Sector, also known as Mandalorian Space, is part of the galaxy’s Outer Rim Territories and includes over a thousand worlds separate from the Galactic Republic. The planet of Mandalore is an inhospitable place, similar to Spock’s home world of Vulcan on Star Trek.

The Mandalorian people are a warlike culture broken up into often-warring clans. Their constant conflict ruined the surface of their planet and the separate populations eventually could only survive living under great domes. Known throughout the galaxy as professional killers, Mandalorians wear superb, expensive beskar armor forged with their clan signet, which is often passed down through families for generations.

Disney has been vague about Mandalore’s place and history, but it appears that the world of Mandalore and its people were almost utterly destroyed in near-genocidal fashion by the Empire, with the survivors scattering across the Outer Rim. This previous event may be the mysterious “Purge” referred to by characters in The Mandalorian. It is also likely that Mandalore ended up become a battleground during the Clone Wars (22-19 BBY).

In classic Star Wars lore, the Mandalorians once allied themselves with the Sith to wage war against the Old Republic and the Jedi Order. A formidable Mandalorian warrior clad in his battle gear was/is considered a match for any Jedi.
