Wonder Woman, Black Widow top list of most anticipated films of 2020

2019 is almost over. It no longer is; it was. It’s time to look forward to what’s coming in 2020. Just lately, Fandango polled “more than 2,000 millennial film fans” about what movies they were most looking forward to seeing in the new year. Check out the results:

  1. Wonder Woman 1984
  2. Black Widow
  3. Eternals
  4. Mulan
  5. No Time to Die
  6. A Quiet Place Part II
  7. Birds of Prey
  8. In the Heights
  9. Soul
  10. Fast & Furious 9

If you thought the superhero boom was going to die down anytime soon, you were very mistaken. Fully four of the top 10 most anticipated movies are superhero flicks, including the top three. Might I also add that all three of those movies are directed by women: Wonder Woman 1984 by Patty Jenkins, Black Widow by Cate Shortland, and The Eternals by Chloé Zhao. The other superhero movie on the list, Birds of Prey, is also directed by a woman, Cathy Yan. Ditto Disney’s live-action Mulan remake, which is directed by Niki Caro and comes in at number four on the list. That’s half the list. That might be historic!

And only four out of the 10 by Disney. Disturbingly, that actually sounds kind of low to me, now that the studio has bought everything.

Sticking with superheroes, while Marvel still has a big presence on here, 2020 will be something of a rebuilding year for the franchise, after it climaxed in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame. I’m fine with Wonder Woman taking the top spot instead, especially after that fantastic recent trailer:

The music is so hypnotic. I can’t stop watching.

Other big franchises also make appearances on the list, like the newest James Bond film and yet another Fast & Furious movie. Soul is the newest movie from Pixar, which is nothing if not reliable. Of course it’s on the list. A Quiet Place Part II is a smaller film, but after how successful the first horror flick was, I’m not surprised to see it here. The most surprising inclusion is probably In The Heights, a screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2005 musical. It looks good; I just wonder how it’s getting a movie adaptation before Hamilton, which is way better known.

Notable absences include DuneGhostbusters: AfterlifeSonic the Hedgehog and Halloween Kills, but there’s always time for the year to surprise us.

In other movie news, Ryan Reynolds revealed during a Christmas Eve appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan that Deadpool 3 is indeed in production at Marvel Studios. “Yeah, we’re working on it right now with the whole team,” he said. “We’re over at Marvel [Studios] now, which is the big leagues all the sudden. It’s kind of crazy. So yeah, we’re working on it.” I dunno if that movie will come out in 2020, but surely it could give some of these others a run for their money.
