Every numbered Star Wars movie, ranked worst to best
By Daniel Roman
1. The Return of the Jedi (Episode VI)
But if we’re truly splitting hairs, then it’s Return of the Jedi that takes the cake, at least in this writer’s humble opinion. The opening set piece at Jabba’s palace is gripping and visually captivating, as well as a great roundabout way to return to the planet where it all started and show just how far Luke Skywalker has come. The writing for the time jump from Episode V to VI is great as well. It’s never explicitly said how much time has passed, but the feeling that Luke has changed and is no longer the apprentice he once was is clear from his very first moment onscreen.
Palpatine also makes his in-the-flesh debut in this film as he shows up to oversee the construction of a new and improved Death Star. Considering how many turns in the most recent Star Wars trilogy felt a little too convenient, it’s worth pointing out that Palpatine’s presence on the Death Star never once felt contrived or forced. It made total sense that he would be there, and that the rebels would see this is the golden opportunity they’ve been waiting for.
The showdown on Endor is another beautiful piece of Star Wars magic, and if I’m being honest, I do love me some Ewoks. George Lucas does a great job with kookie, fun species, and the Ewoks are one of his best. They served as a great counterpoint to the seriousness of what was happening inside the Death Star, and showed how even humble little jungle bears would join in the fight for good when the Empire pushed too far. The guerrilla warfare on the forest moon was only outdone by the epic space battle happening above.
But at the heart of what makes this movie so good is Luke’s struggle against turning to the Dark Side. Though The Rise of Skywalker might claim to be the true end of this epic saga, there really aren’t any moments that can compare to Luke fighting his father while the Emperor watches, cackling, because no matter what happens, the Dark Side wins.
Or so Palpatine thought. Darth Vader’s turn back to the Light is one of the most powerful moments in the series, and a huge part of what makes this film such a classic. The Return of the Jedi still stands as the only conclusion to a Star Wars trilogy that truly aces its landing. It’s satisfying, powerful, moving and timeless.
And it has Ewoks!
