Rumor: The next Star Wars film to be set 400 years before Episode I

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the nine-film, 42-year-old Skywalker Saga came to an end with a resounding ”meh.” So what’s next for the franchise on the big screen? We know there’s no new Star Wars movie planned for a few years and that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are no longer making a new trilogy (and we haven’t heard much about Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy in a while either). Well, according to Making Star Wars, the next movie may be set 400 years before the events of Episode I: The Phantom Menace…but when the Republic was at its height and Yoda was a spry 500 years of age.

According to the editor-in-chief Jason Ward, instead of a trilogy, this new film will start “a series of films which will be released in the same story era and interconnect.” Apparently, these are the movies Benioff and Weiss were going to make before they left.

So the series is set during “The High Republic” era of Star Wars, meaning there will be multiple Jedi Temples spread throughout the galaxy instead of just the one shown on Coruscant in the prequel trilogy. Darth Bane has set in place his Rule of Two, which dictates that there can only be two Sith operational at any one time: a master and an apprentice.

If you’re wondering what that time looked like, take a look at this cinematic from the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic. This is set long before the time contemplated for the new film — 1000s of years, in fact — but it might give us an idea of what we’re in for:

Exciting, right?

In other Star Wars news, Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series is returning for its seventh and final season this February. We now kind of know exactly what day it comes back.

As reported by Comic Book Resources, Disney+ announced the premiere of season 7 would be on February 17 in its “30 Disney Things to Look Forward to in 2020” video, but that video has since been removed.

Could the premiere date be getting changed? Who knows? For now, let’s just keep our eyes on February 17.
