Avatar came out out over a decade ago and became a huge success, becoming the most profitable movie in the world…until Avengers: Endgame surpassed it last year. For such a huge movie, we’ve heard relatively little about Avatar over the past 10 years, but that’s all about to change as Disney and director James Cameron mount not one, not two, but four sequels set on the alien world of Pandora.

If you’ll remember, the original movie involved paraplegic Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) heading to Pandora as part of a military operation. Using advanced technology, he was able to transfer his consciousness into the body of one of the Na’vi, the native inhabitants of Pandora, at first as a way to make inroads with the rest of the species. Eventually, he decided he liked it so much he stayed in that form permanently and turned against his colonial masters, and here we are.

The new movies will continue Jake’s journey, starting with Avatar 2: The Way of Water. We’re gonna see a whole lotta new parts of Pandora, and the official Avatar Twitter account is giving us a preview with some newly released concept art:

I don’t know if all of these images are from The Way of Water or if they’re drawn from all the sequels, but all of them do feature water. Apparently, each movie will be themed around a different part of Pandoran geography, so water, sky…I dunno, ditches, you get the idea.

Avatar: The Way of Water releases on December 17, 2021. After that, it’s Avatar all the way through the rest of the decade.
