Trump and Soleimani fought with Game of Thrones memes before deadly airstrike
By Dan Selcke
Just lately, everyone is talking about President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy a targeted airstrike that killed Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian general, this past Friday. Was it a sanctionable use of United States military power? Are we on the verge of war? These questions are way beyond this website, so let’s just talk about the time these two fought each other online with Game of Thrones memes.
If you’ll remember, Trump at one time had something of a fondness for Game of Thrones memes, to the point where HBO gently asked him to stop. Remember this one?
This was a threat against Iran, posted on November of 2018 after Trump had withdrawn the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal framework. Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (or Quds Force) replied on his (since suspended) Instagram account a day later with his own meme:
Well, he didn’t twist a well-known Game of Thrones phrase like Trump did, but he got the font right.
And that’s not the only time Soleimani used pop culture references to lash out. In July of 2018, he posted an image of himself standing in front of an exploding White House, which is taken from the 2013 movie Olympus Has Fallen:
Yikes.
From memes to missiles, that’s the story as we know it.
