Doctor Who: River Song faces the Weeping Angels once more in her spin-off’s seventh series – out today!
By James Aggas
River Song plays detective and faces some old enemies in the seventh series of her own Doctor Who spin-off – out now!
I must admit, I’m quite the fan of Doctor Who spin-off The Diary of River Song. While the series has featured many incarnations of her husband – or even her husband’s greatest enemy – what makes the series so brilliant is how it reminds us what makes River such a fantastic character in her own right.
And that looks set to continue in her latest box set. Once again, we’re getting an anthology of stories from across River’s life rather than one epic story. However, all four stories in this volume do have one thing in common: they feature River playing detective.
"River Song finds many amusements away from the Doctor. Not least of them is solving impossible mysteries, cracking insoluble crimes. Sometimes she’s Melody, sometimes she’s River, but she’ll always unravel the case…"
Alex Kingston and Timothy Blore star as River and her student Luke in The Diary of River Song: Series 7.

Playing detective
Alex Kingston lets listeners know exactly what we can expect from her latest series.
"I feel really lucky because one day I’m in a Scandi Noir, the next I’m back being Melody Malone in New York, investigating a murder. Then it’s nuns with guns and buns, with a largely female cast, and – finally – facing the Weeping Angels. I’m really thrilled, because it’s quite rare for River to encounter some of her old foes in the audio adventures."
Unsurprisingly, she’s also really happy with the longevity that Diary offers.
"I’ve been given the most incredible gift, because River’s diary can go on forever. The fact that she wrote down and kept track of all of her adventures back and forth in time, and across the universe, means the writers can keep inventing new stories for her. It really is the gift that keeps on giving."
I think that’s true for many of us. The Diary of River Song has proved to be an extremely enjoyable spin-off series that can take place anywhere in River’s life. I’m looking forward to listening to and reviewing each episode of this latest box set very shortly.
