Game of Thrones, The Mandalorian score most nominations at VES Awards
By Dan Selcke
Awards season rolls on as the Visual Effects Society announces the nominations for its annual VES awards. On the movie side, Alita: Battle Angel, The Lion King and Toy Story 4 are in the lead with four nods apiece. But they’re both bested by a pair of TV shows: Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian, which received six noms apiece.
Here are the categories where the final season of Game of Thrones is nominated:
- Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode (for “The Bells”)
- Outstanding Created Environment in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project (for the Red Keep Plaza)
- Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project (for “The Bells”)
- Outstanding Compositing in an Episode (for both “The Bells” and “The Long Night”; the show is competing against itself here)
- Outstanding Special (Practical) Effects in a Photoreal or Animated Project (for “The Bells”)
So these visual effects professionals really thought a lot of “The Bells.” And if you watched it, it’s not hard to suss out why. I don’t think that episode will ever stop being hard to watch, but it looks amazing:
The Mandalorian is up for a mess of awards, too, and is competing in three of the same categories as Thrones. I think we can all agree that Baby Yoda should win “Outstanding Animated Character in an Episode or Real-Time Project.”
