Game of Thrones nominated for Directors Guild of America Awards
By Dan Selcke
Awards season rolls on with the announcement of the nominations for the Directors Guild of America Awards. And when it comes to direction, it’s hard to beat the hard-working pros over at Game of Thrones. Indeed, two GoT directors are in contention for the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series: David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik:
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series
- Nicole Kassell: Watchmen, “It’s Summer and We’re Running Out of Ice”
- Mark Mylod: Succession, “This Is Not For Tears”
- David Nutter: Game of Thrones, “The Last of the Starks”
- Miguel Sapochnik: Game of Thrones, “The Long Night”
- Stephen Williams: Watchmen, “This Extraordinary Being”
Funnily enough, both Sapochnik and Nutter have won this award before, Sapochnik for season 6’s “The Battle of the Bastards” and Nutter for season 5’s “Mother’s Mercy,” which contained scenes like Cersei’s walk of shame and Jon Snow’s murder. Will one of them clinch it here at the end of all things?
Also kudos to Watchmen to scoring a pair of nominations. Damn, the whole category is HBO shows. The suits are happy campers!
Here are some of the other notable categories:
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series
- Dan Attias: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, “It’s the Sixties, Man!”
- Bill Hader: Barry, “ronny/lily”
- David Mandel: Veep, “Veep”
- Amy Sherman Palladino: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, “It’s Comedy or Cabbage”
- Daniel Palladino: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, “Marvelous Radio”
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film
- Bong Joon Ho, Parasite
- Sam Mendes, 1917
- Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
- Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood
- Taika Waititi, Jojo Rabbit
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television and Limited Series
- Ava Duvernay, When They See Us
- Vince Gilligan, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie
- Thomas Kail, Fosse/Verdon, “Nowadays”
- Johan Renck, Chernobyl
- Minkie Spiro, Fosse/Verdon, “All I Care About Is Love”
- Jessicu Yu, Fosse/Verdon, “Glory”
I suppose I’m rooting for Veep, Parasite and Chernobyl. Man, there’s a lot I still have to see from last year.
You can head here to see the full list of nominations. The DGAs go down on January 25.
