Jared Leto is putting the DCEU and crackhead Joker in his rearview mirror and is moving into Marvel territory with Sony’s Morbius movie. Check out the trailer:
“One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius,” reads the synopsis. “Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.”
Morbius the Living Vampire, if you’re unaware, is an enemy of Spider-Man…or at least he starts out that way. The webslinger makes the briefest of appearances in the trailer on a poster. Between this and Venom, Sony is making its own MCU-adjacent Spider-Man villain universe. And yes, that was Michael Keaton’s Vulture making a cameo at the end, reprising his role from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Is Sony leading up to a Sinister Six movie, kind of an anti-Avengers, if you will?
Maybe we’ll learn more when the movie debuts sometime this summer — there’s no specific release date yet.
Morbius is directed by Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa. Along with Leto, it’ll star Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Jared Harris as Morbius’ mentor, and Tyrese Gibson as Simon Stroud.
