David Harbour, Florence Pugh kick ass in new Black Widow trailer

In the space of a day, Black Widow went from being a highly anticipated new entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a highly anticipated new entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a couple of honest-to-goodness Oscar nominees at the head of the cast.

The movie is the long-overdue first solo outing for Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff, the superspy who’s featured in…what, seven MCU movies by now? And the other day, Johansson was nominated for not one but two Academy Awards: for Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Jojo Rabbit and for Actress in a Leading for her turn in Marriage Story.

The movie is set while Black Widow is on the run following the events of Captain America: Civil War. She returns home to her native Russia and reconnects with her found family, including fellow assassin Yelena, played by the extremely talented Florence Pugh, who herself just landed as Oscar nomination for playing Amy in Little Women. And David Harbour from Stranger Things plays an aging superhero called Red Guardian — sort of the Soviet Union’s answer to Captain America — and a father figure to Natasha. Sure, Harbour doesn’t have an Oscar nomination yet, but give it a minute.

And there’s Rachel Weitz vamping it up as Melina, another assassin who came out of the same program that produced Natasha and Yelena, and Taskmaster, a villain who seems to mirror all of Black Widow’s attacks. Plus skydiving fights. The movie just looks fun as hell. If you don’t believe me, check out the new teaser:

Loving the costume changes, too.

Marvel is in a rebuilding phase after Avengers: Endgame, and since this movie is set in the past it’s probably not going to push the story forward much, but I’m really looking forward to seeing what director Cate Shortland has put together. Black Widow comes out on May 1.

Next. Jar Jar Binks to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi series…with a beard?. dark
