A Fire & Blood paperback edition is coming, with new illustrations!

Fire & Blood, the book that is serving as a basis for the HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series — House of the Dragon — is getting a new paperback release that will include five new illustrations. If you’re unfamiliar, Fire & Blood is the first of two planned books covering the fictional history of House Targaryen, from Aegon I’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms to the end of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The announcement of this new version of the novel comes directly from the bearded bard himself, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin:

Of course, we don’t know what new illustrations the paperback edition will include, but if you’ve read the book already, you know that artist Doug Wheatley did incredible work. Hopefully we can expect more of the same.

You know, this is also coming at a time when we might start hearing things about House of the Dragon, which supposedly is centered around the Dance of the Dragons, although we’re not sure of all the specifics yet. Wouldn’t it be perfect if HBO coordinated some announcements about the show to coincide with the new release?

Whatever happens, the new Fire & Blood paperback will be released on May 5, so I’d keep your eyes peeled for pre-order announcements in the near future.
