An animated Aquaman series is coming HBO Max
This week’s Television Critics Association winter press tour has been chock-full of exciting news. For instance, we learned that HBO plans on having its highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, ready to go by 2022. We’ve seen teases for HBO’s space comedy Avenue 5, were updated on the possibility of Watchmen season 2, more seasons of His Dark Materials, and more. The days have been packed.
We’ve also heard stuff about WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service, the confusingly named HBO Max. (Like, it’ll have some HBO stuff, but HBO itself isn’t going away, and it’ll have other stuff…just go with it.) SyFy Wire has it that there’s an animated Aquaman mini-series on the way.
Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be a three-episode series from James Wan, the director of the Aquaman movie starring Jason Momoa. It will feature well-known characters from that movie, as well as the DC comic books. I wonder if that means Jason Momoa will be voicing the King of the Seven Seas.
Aquaman: King of Atlantis “begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a LOT of catching up to do,” read the press release. “Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar [Willem Dafoe in the movie], and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess [Amber Heard in the movie].”
"Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother [Orm, played by Patrick Wilson in the movie] who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!"
Each animated episode “will have a unique storyline following the adventures of Aquaman as protector of the deep.” Victor Courtright (ThunderCats Roar!) and Marly Halpern-Graser (Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) will serve as showrunners. There’s no word on when the show will debut, but it’s probably safe to bet it will be in May with HBO Max launches.
From one Justice League member to another, HBO Max will also be home to a live-action Green Lantern show. Head of original content Sarah Aubrey delivered an update on the series, which comes from Greg Berlanti, the creator of the Arrowverse on the CW.
The show “will span several decades and focus on origin stories of two Green Lanterns on Earth,” according to Aubrey. There may also be an appearance by Sinestro, a bad guy who founds his own, evil version of the Green Lantern Corps called the Sinestro Corps. While the Green Lantern Corps are green, the Sinestro Corps is yellow. It’s diabolical.
As with Aquaman: King of Atlantis, there is no release date for the Green Lantern show yet, but as long as the producers stay away from Ryan Reynolds, we should be okay.
