Doctor Strange 2 synopsis suggests the return of a villain

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to begin filming in May. Between the latest casting details and an interesting synopsis, we’ve learnt that there will be not one, not two, but three villains in the movie! And it looks like one of these villains could be the ally-turned-villain Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor ), returning from the first movie.

This rumor got started after casting company Backstage released a short synopsis for the Doctor Strange sequel:

"After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend-turned-enemy puts an end to his plans and causes Strange to unleash unspeakable evil."

The phrase “friend-turned-enemy” describes Mordo perfectly. Mordo started out as a colleague of Strange studying under the Ancient One, but by the end of the movie, he’s become disillusioned with the path he chose. In a post-credits scene, we see Mordo take his first turn towards villainy. He believes there are too many sorcerers in the world, and seeks to eliminate them.

As for these other two villains, DiscussingFilm revealed that Marvel is looking for an African-American male in their 30s-40s and a woman of any ethnicity in their 30s-40s. It’s yet to be seen who these villains will be, but Nightmare would be a good guess given how prominent a villain they are in the comics. In fact, director Scott Derrickson fought to have Nightmare in this sequel, so I’d expect to see him turn up.

Of course, that point could be complicated by the fact that Derrickson, who helmed the first Doctor Strange movie, is no longer in the director’s chair. It may be difficult for Marvel to find a worthy successor, but they’re nothing if not adaptable.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to release on May 7, 2021.
