Doctor Who: Tom Baker’s third season is coming to Blu-Ray, and we’re hugely excited about it
By James Aggas
Later this year, Tom Baker’s excellent third season of Doctor Who will be released on Blu-Ray, boasting a huge amount of bonus features!
Last week, some major news was revealed regarding Doctor Who on Blu-Ray. On Monday Apr 20 (we hope – quite a few releases have been delayed, to be honest), Season 14 will be released on Blu-Ray!
This is fantastic news, to say the least. Tom Baker’s third season playing the Fourth Doctor is an absolutely brilliant one. Featuring stories as brilliant as The Deadly Assassin, The Robots of Death and The Talons of Weng-Chiang, it’s probably one of the greatest seasons in Doctor Who history.
This was part of a particularly strong era for the programme. Along with featuring the brilliant Tom Baker in the leading role (who today celebrates his 86th birthday), Season 14 also featured Robert Holmes as script editor and Philip Hinchcliffe as producer.
The combination gave us a consistently strong era, full of iconic monsters and horrific stories. Season 14 was the third and final season for Hinchcliffe, with Holmes leaving his position as script editor early on in Season 15. Together, they ensured that their run ended on a high.
Special features
As you can see above, another tongue-in-cheek trailer has been made for this box set. We even get a glimpse of the set itself, and it definitely looks impressive!
Along with featuring remastered stories, the box set boasts an extensive collection of special features, including:

More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
That’s definitely a considerable amount of extras. They all sound fantastic, but the one that’s really caught my eye is the tribute to Elisabeth Sladen. As a huge fan of Sarah Jane Smith, it seems fitting that the companion’s final season looks back on Sladen’s legacy.
The conversation with Philip Hinchcliffe should also be fascinating and informative. Previous conversations between Matthew Sweet and major figures in Doctor Who have always been great to watch on other Blu-Ray releases, and I expect the same will be true of this one.
Season 14 of Doctor Who: The Collection is currently scheduled to be released in the UK on Apr 20. Currently, no release date has been revealed for North America or Australia, although if previous experience is anything to go by, it’ll be at least a couple of months. In the meantime: Season 26 will be released in the UK on Jan 27, while it’ll be released in North America on Mar 24.
