Nicolas Cage to steal the Oval Office or something in National Treasure 3

It always seem weird that Disney stopped with two National Treasure movies. The series, which starred Nicolas Cage as antique-dealing American history plunderer Benjamin Franklin Gates, was good dumb fun, the kind of series where a character could unironically declare, “I’m gonna steal the Declaration of Independence,” and then just…do it. The movies made good money at the box office, but for whatever reason we never saw a third film after National Treasure: Book of Secrets bowed in 2007.

That might all be changing soon, and we know thanks to a Hollywood Reporter interview with screenwriter Chris Bremner, the guy behind the just-released Bad Boys For Life. While the interview is mostly about planning for Bad Boys 4, which is also a thing that’s happening, THR let slip about another interesting project Bremner was working on:

"Bremner’s schedule is heating up as he is also writing National Treasure 3 for Disney, among other projects. That project is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who is also the producer behind Bad Boys for Life."

Now, just because Bremner is working on a script for National Treasure 3: Martha Washington’s Golden Army doesn’t mean it’ll actually happen — projects go nowhere in Hollywood all the time. Still, this was more than enough to set the internet wondering what mystery Cage might uncover next, or what pieces of classic Americana he might steal.

What really killed William Henry Harrison? Was it pneumonia contracted after standing in the rain at his inauguration, or was it…MURDER?

If this really is happening, they would have to bring back Cage, right? If they didn’t — if they replaced him or rebooted the series with a different actor or something — that’d be like stealing the joy of the American public, something Benjamin Franklin Gates would never do.
