J.J. Abrams, the man who resurrected Star Wars for Disney and Star Trek for Paramount, has been asked by Warner Bros. to work on another franchise: Justice League Dark, a superhero team with a long history in DC Comics.

According to Deadline, Abrams’ Bad Robot production company currently speaking with writers to see which characters from the Justice League Dark universe will get their own film or television show. Characters in the mix include supernatural detective John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, a vampire named Andrew Bennett, a shapeshifter named Black Orchid, Doctor Mist, Frankenstein, Pandora, and the team’s resident healer Nightmare Nurse.

As you can tell, the theme of Justice League Dark is “spooky,” with most of its members having something to do with magic and such. And don’t we need a little magic in our entertainment? In the comics, the Justice League Dark team usually takes on cases outside the purview of the ordinary Justice League’s purview. It’s well known that the only thing Superman fears is voodoo.

As Deadline notes, it’s unclear if Abrams himself will be directing any of the projects, but if Star Wars or Star Trek are any indication, he may at least get them started. This is all part of an overall deal Abrams signed with WarnerMedia a while back, so expect some of these projects to show up on HBO Max, the company’s upcoming streaming service.
