It’s been a long time coming, folks. Way back in April of 2019, Disney showed a brief look at the long-awaited final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars…but then there was silence. Sure, Disney was busy filming The Rise of Skywalker, overseeing a new Star Wars video game, preparing a new streaming service and making The Mandalorian, but we never said our feelings of abandonment were rational.
But that’s all over now, as Lucasfilm is bringing back Star Wars: The Clone Wars for one final season on Disney+. Check out the awesome trailer:
There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s just get right down to the nitty-gritty. First things first: that voice you hear belongs to none other than Darth Maul. At the time of The Clone Wars season 7, he is still the ruler of Mandalore, despite being defeated and captured by Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine). The members of the Mandalorian warrior group Death Watch, still loyal to him, helped Maul escape Sidious’ clutches.
“Soon, the galaxy will be remade,” Maul says, as we see a ship move into orbit over Mandalore, and Mandalorian warrior Bo Katan looking at the carnage left in the wake of Death Watch’s destruction of the planet.
“The Jedi and Republic…”
“…will die.” This scene makes it look as if Maul has had a vision from the Force because everything he says comes true. Also, that’s Mace Windu and Obi-Wan Kenobi in the above pic, surrounded by Separatists battle droids.
Here, the Jedi Council convene a meeting where they sense a plot to destroy the Jedi.
Below, Maul uses some sort of Force technique on a clone trooper. Maybe he’s trying to find out what the Republic’s next move is for Mandalore.
Ahsoka Tano is back for the final season of The Clone Wars! Here she is riding a speeder bike:
She and Bo Katan share a friendly handshake, meaning they’ll be working together in season 7. Bo Katan was the last Mandalorian to wield the legendary Darksaber before it fell into the hands of The Mandalorian’s Moff Gideon.
Republic ships arrive in orbit above Mandalore:
Clone commandos are ready to get to work. That’s Captain Rex in the front with his uniquely painted helmet:
It looks like Anakin Skywalker moves ever-closer to the Dark Side as he’s about to murder some alien’s face.
Being his former padawan, Ahsoka clearly feels the disturbance in the Force when Anakin strikes out in anger:
Next, we have the 501st forming up with Ahsoka’s markings on their helmet.
Ahsoka is clearly moved by the gesture. Excuse me while I get this darn dust out of my eye.
This looks like members of the Mandalorian Death Watch attacking a downed clone trooper transport ship. Man, those Mandalorians are vicious. This is the way.
Here’s a nice moment as Anakin has a holocomm chat with his pregnant wife, Padme.
Finally, Ahsoka and Maul meet in the throne room of Mandalore:
Ahsoka draws and ignites her lightsabers…
…and Maul ignites his double-bladed lightsaber in response.
It’s interesting to see these two prepare to face off, because in the sequel to The Clone Wars — Star Wars Rebels — an older Maul and much more powerful Ahsoka meet beneath a Sith Temple and he asks her, “Running away again, Lady Tano?” I guess we’ll get to see what he means in The Clone Wars season 7!
Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 7, the final season, will make its highly-anticipated debut on February 21, only on Disney+.
