For a while, we’ve been hearing rumors that Netflix was producing an animated Witcher project to tie into its very successful live-action show, starring Henry Cavill as a monster hunter who wanders the fantastical Continent plying his trade. Now, it seems like we have confirmation, courtesy of fansite Redanian Intelligence.
According to the site, Netflix is producing an animated movie called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, which is a rock-solid title. Redanian Intelligence found an entry for that project on the Writer’s Guild of America website, with Beau DeMayo — who wrote an episode of the show’s first season and is signed on for the second — credited as a writer. Also, it found a CV for actor Harriet Kershaw, who’s listed as played “various roles” in a 2020 project listed simply as The Witcher. Notes: “Netflix/ Blend Audio.”
UPDATE: Netflix has confirmed that this is indeed happening:
The second season of The Witcher proper isn’t due out until 2021. Perhaps Nightmare of the Wolf is what executive producer Tomek Baginski when he mentioned “a few more interesting surprises between seasons”?
As to what the new project could be about, it’s hard to know. The first two Witcher books are basically short story collections, and all of the stories made it into the first season of the show. Perhaps Nightmare of the Wolf could adapt one of those. And then there are all the stories made up for the video game series.
Or maybe it’s something completely original. Geralt of Rivia is a wandering witcher with a magically extended life; you can make up all sorts of stuff for him to get up to.
