Jaskier actor loved making Henry Cavill break character on The Witcher
By Dan Selcke
Henry Cavill is…The Witcher, a gruff, haunted monster hunter traveling the Continent kicking ass and chewing bubblegum, and bubblegum doesn’t exist in this world.
And that’s all great, but what’s a grimdark hero without a wacky sidekick to take the air out of his super-seriousness? Enter Jaskier, a free-wheeling bard who befriends the witcher Geralt of Rivia and tags along with him for pretty much the entirety of Netflix’s hit show, making pithy asides all the while. He also sings that “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” song everyone was humming for a while, so we have a lot to thank him for.
Jaskier is played by Joey Batey, who talked to ComicBook.com about playing the bright yin to Cavill’s dark yang. “Within the first couple of minutes of meeting him, we were in fits of giggles,” Batey remembered. “I don’t want to dispel any of the magic of Henry Cavill, but he’s a total goofball and I publicly love him. We make each other laugh, we have a very similar sense of humor quite a lot of the time.”
"I’d love to see the blooper reel of this show one day, because we’re constantly making each other laugh, which is difficult, because obviously Henry’s playing a very gruff character that’s not supposed to smile very much. And so, when he breaks, that’s my favorite thing. If I can get Henry to laugh unintentionally, I have won. Still, filming every scene with Henry was a joy."
I wouldn’t mind seeing that blooper reel, either. The show has to give us something to tide us over until season 2 hits in 2021, after all.
Speaking of season 2, according to our calculations, Jaskier will be 51 years old when it starts, assuming season 2 picks up right after the end of season 1. Will he still be the carefree bard we remember?
