The Obi-Wan Kenobi series from Disney+ is currently on hold for rewrites, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show, which is still moving forward, stars Ewan McGregor as the Jedi master, reprising his role from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The show is set after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope, so Obi-Wan is hanging out as a hermit on Tatooine, near where Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru were raising little Luke Skywalker.
So what went wrong? Per THR, it was the scripts by writer Hossein Amini. According to one source, the story would have involved Obi-Wan taking a hand in protecting young Luke, which may have seemed too similar to The Mandalorian, where the titular character takes in the adorable Baby Yoda.
In any case, Disney is reportedly looking for a new writer, and reducing the number of episodes from six to four. Deborah Chow, who worked on The Mandalorian, will stay on as director.
So should Star Wars fans panic? According to McGregor, no. “I think we start shooting early next year as opposed to summer this year,” he told Variety at a press event for Birds of Prey. “I think the scripts are great. They’re in really good shape. They want them to be better. I think we keep our same air date. All good.”
"I didn’t realize until we got here tonight and everybody is going, ‘Oh, my god!’ But it’s not really as dramatic as it might seem."
That’s our Obi-Wan, putting a positive spin on things.
