Neil Gaiman shoots down filming rumors about Netflix’s Sandman

Author Neil Gaiman recently took to Twitter to dismiss rumors making the rounds lately about Netflix’s forthcoming adaptation of his classic Sandman series. Depending on who you listen to, the show may start filming as early as this month. But in reality…

If you haven’t read The Sandman, all this hype may be a bit confusing. The series revolves around an anthropomorphic family of seven characters known as the Endless, each of whom represents a different facet of the human condition. The comic series is considered by many to be Gaiman’s finest work. So when news comes out about filming apparently commencing soon, people (including myself) are bound to get excited!

But despite rumors, that was always unlikely. Netflix only announced plans to adapt The Sandman back in July 2019. And since, we’ve received no casting or production news. Netflix has a placeholder for the show on its website, though, which is something.

In his right-to-the-point tweet, Gaiman confirmed that no filming will happen this month. He also revealed that they don’t even have a director in place, or a cast. However, he did tease that there are some “glorious” scripts in the works.

As for what we do know about the series, it’s been confirmed that Gaiman will act as an executive producer. He’ll be pretty involved in production, moreso than he was in Starz’s adaptation of his novel American Gods. However, he won’t be as involved as he was with Amazon’s adaptation of Good Omens, a book he wrote with Terry Pratchett.

Also, while the original comic kicked off in late 1980s, around the same time it was published, the show will be set closer to our time, although given how often the story flits back in time, that doesn’t mean a whole lot. Still, for the parts set in “modern times,” it’ll be around 2022, give or take a couple years.

Filming might not be happening just yet,  but I have full faith in Neil Gaiman and the rest of the team to take their time and make the perfect Sandman adaptation, no matter how long it takes!
