Netflix’s animated Witcher movie will follow Geralt’s mentor
The Witcher season 1 is breaking records over at Netflix, and while the second season won’t be out for a while, clearly, people want more. And Netflix is going to give it to them. The studio is readying an animated prequel movie about Geralt of Rivia’s mentor, Vesemir, called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. According to the official synopsis, the movie will follow Vesemir as he “begins his own journey as a witcher after the mysterious Deglan claims him through the Law of Surprise.”
So who is Vesemir and why should we care about him? Well, he’s the oldest living witcher at Kaer Morhen, which is basically like witcher Hogwarts. He was a father figure to Geralt and the other witchers-in-training. But this movie will be about Vesemir as a younger man as he undergoes the notoriously brutal process that turns people into witchers. It involves difficult physical challenges, you have to imbibe substances that change your physiology…it’s all kinds of unpleasant.
It’s unclear if the movie will show us Vesemir eventually paying it forward by mentoring a young Geralt, but that would be a good way to end it, wouldn’t it?
We also don’t know who will play Vesemir, in Nightmare of the Wolf or The Witcher season 2. So far as the base show goes, there’s been a swell of support among fans for the role to go to Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, and Hamill himself sounds like he’s up for it. Hamill did play a wise old teacher to Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. And then, in the final season of Knightfall, Hamill played Talus, a grizzled old veteran who trained initiates to the Knights Templar. Maybe playing Vesemir is destiny.
Hell, maybe Hamill could voice the character as a younger man, too; he does have an extensive voice-acting background.
In any case, we’re getting more news about actors and characters to be including in The Witcher season 2 lately, so hopefully we’ll hear more about the possibility of Hamill joining the team, as well. In the meantime, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf should help tide people over, although we’re not sure of an exact release date yet.
