And awards season rolls on. This past weekend brought a few big award shows, including the Art Directors Guild Awards, the Writers Guild Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). How did they go? Let’s take a look.
HBO was a big winner at the Writers Guild of America Awards. Watchmen, the network’s incendiary new superhero series, won the New Series award over shows like Dead To Me, Russian Doll and What We Do In the Shadows. Barry, Bill Hader’s hilarious assassin comedy, won the Comedy Series award over stuff like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Veep. HBO’s historical miniseries Chernobyl won the Original Long Form award, and Succession — the network’s thrilling drama about the lives of America’s ultra-rich — walked away with the awards for both Episodic Drama and Drama Series.
It wasn’t all wine and roses. Veep lost the Episodic Comedy award to Netflix’s Dead to Me, which I consider tantamount to a war crime. Okay, not really, but I really liked Veep.
In movies, Bong Joon Ho’s wicked Parasite won the award for Original Screenplay. Overall, it was a great night for good watching!

Parasite also won at the Art Director’s Guild Awards, taking home the gold for Contemporary Film. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home the award for Period Film and Avengers: Endgame took it for Fantasy Film.
Some genre stuff snuck in there. For example, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy took home the award for One-Hour Contemporary Single-Camera Series over stuff like Big Little Lies, The Boys and The Handmaid’s Tale. And Chernobyl continued to clean up for HBO with the award for Television Movie or Limited Series.
The big snub at this awards show, to me, was that Bill Groom of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won out over Game of Thrones production designer Deborah Riley in the category of One-Hour Period or Fantasy Single-Camera Series. I like Mrs. Maisel a lot, but I would have honored Riley’s incredible work on Thrones, especially since this is the last time she’ll be nominated for it.
Finally, here are a few of the notable awards from the BAFTAs, which deals only with film:
- Best Film: 1917
- Best Directo: 1917
- Leading Actress: Renée Zellweger (Judy)
- Leading Actor: Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)
- Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt (Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood)
- Supporting Actress: Laura Dern (Marriage Story)
- Adapted Screenplay: Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit)
- Original Screenplay: Han Jin Won, Bong Joon-ho (Parasite)
The only two big award shows left in the year are the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars. We’re nearly there!
