Rejoice, children of the 1980s, because director Ron Howard has confirmed that he’s working on a Willow series for Disney+.

Willow, of course, is Howard’s 1988’s fantasy movie about a farmer named Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) and a warrior named Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) who team up to protect a baby prophesied to topple a tyrannical queen. And it looks like a couple of familiar faces will be returning for the show.

“We are developing Willow for Disney+,” Howard told Collider at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. “And I don’t know about directing or not, but Jon Kasdan is writing, he’s very passionate about it, great job. We don’t have a green light yet, but if it goes, I’ll certainly want to roll up my sleeves and be a part of that, because that would be great, to revisit that world.”

Jon Kasdan — son of Star Wars screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan — also worked with Howard when the director was brought on to finish Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. It also sounds like Howard wants Kasdan to be the showrunner for Willow. “[I]n this world of these event series, they really do look to the showrunners and the key creatives to tell them their vision,” Howard said. “It’s one of the reasons why TV has gotten so good, is that they really are looking at the showrunners as authors of something that they’re deeply passionate about. And Jon is deeply passionate about Willow, which tickles me to no end.”

As for who will be in it, Howard confirmed that Warwick Davis, now 50, is on tap. “Warwick Davis is going to be in it and so yes, I think it’s safe to say it’s decades later.” Val Kilmer — who is now 60 — was also a key part of the original movie, but Howard didn’t mention if he’ll be reprising his role. Let’s hope.
