Meet the robot Spider-Man who will soon be swinging over Disneyland
By Dan Selcke
It’s now been over a decade since Disney bought Marvel, and it’s kind of hard to believe that it’s taken this long for the studio to integrate Marven’s tremendously popular superheroes in a major way into its theme parks. That changes this summer, when the Avengers Campus opens in Disneyland.
Featuring Avengers-themed rides and restaurants, the Avengers Campus will immerse you in the world of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and the rest. It also sounds like Disney is cooking up a twist on the old “employee wanders around dressed as Micky Mouse” trick. Oh, we’re sure there will be actors dressed up as the Hulk and Captain Marvel and company walking around taking pictures, but look up, and you’ll see something new.
To be specific, you’ll see a robot Spider-Man being launched overhead, bending and twisting just like the real article. Disney dropped a trailer showing off its new mechanical star the other day:
And here’s a quick video showing how the team put the metal superhero together:
“I’m glad you hit a bird,” one Disney Imagineer to another, who laughs. Odd profession, that.
But seriously, it is impressive how Mecha-Spider-Man moves in the air, although I can’t be the only one afraid that a freak gust of wind or big bird or something will knock him off his pre-determined arc and into an unsuspecting family of four at some point.
I’m sure they test this thing thoroughly beforehand. Besides, you heard the Imagineer: birds should be afraid of Mecha-Spider-Man, not the other way around.
