Run down Cybermen are coming in the Doctor Who season 12 finale
By Ariba Bhuvad
Brace yourself, Doctor Who fans: the rest of season 12 is going to be a wild ride. The show has released a “what’s to come” teaser that includes some old friends, including…THE CYBERMEN. Take a look:
They look broken down, beaten, and rusty, but it doesn’t mean they’re any less capable of wreaking havoc on the Doctor, her companions, and the world. I think I’ve said this before, but the Cybermen have always been the Doctor Who villains that freak me out the most. Seeing them in this “new” form makes them even more frightening than before.
We’ve also learned the titles for the season 12 two-part finale: “Ascension of the Cybermen” and “The Timeless Children.” Dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuun.
The return of the Cybermen has been teased multiple times in promos, as well as through the return of Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), who warned the Doctor to beware “the lone Cyberman.” What it all means, we have no idea, but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s going to be epic. I suspect it’ll all tie in somehow to the whole “there’s another Doctor” reveal, or at least I hope so.
Speaking with RadioTimes.com, showrunner Chris Chibnall spoke a bit about the return of the Cybermen:
"I think we’ve probably done something slightly different with them this year. There was a particular story I wanted to tell. So there were lots and lots of reasons for doing them. They’re really awesome, and they’re just relentless, the Cybermen. They just don’t stop."
I know I’ve spent a good chunk of my day thinking and talking about the new look for the Cybermen. It looks like a hodge-podge of old and new. Their bodies look like they have in recent times while their very large heads are reminiscent of how they looked on Doctor Who in the 1960s and ’70s.
I can’t wait to find out what all of this means, but in the meantime, new episodes of Doctor Who air on Sundays.
