Keanu Reeves is back as Neo as filming on The Matrix 4 begins!
By Dan Selcke
It’s been nearly two decades since the story of Neo — the One, the Whoa — came to an end in The Matrix Revolutions. (Beware SPOILERS for a 17-year-old movie below.)
And when I say “came to an end,” I mean it. Neo died in that movie, after going blind and convincing the malevolent leader of the robots to stop plugging every human being on the planet into an advanced computer simulation to keep them docile while siphoning off their energy as fuel. But when your premise is that wild, I guess there are a lot of ways to bring dead characters back in one way or another.
And that’s what’s going to happen in The Matrix 4, which is due out in March of next year. Filming on the movie just started, and fans are recording footage of Reeves shooting scenes in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco. Check it out below!
Neo has had time to grow out his hair in the last 17 years; originally, he kept it pretty close-cropped. Now, Reeves looks more like he does in the John Wick movies, with long hair and a beard.
You can also see original trilogy director Lana Wachowski in this video. Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) was spotted on set as well.
So Reeves and Moss are both returning from the original movies. Newcomers include folks like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) and Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter). And Warner Bros. is in final talks with Bollywood veteran Priyanka Chopra to join the movie. All in all, it’s an impressive cast, although I’m a little bummed that Laurence Fishburne doesn’t look to be coming back as Neo’s mentor Morpheus, doubly so because he actually survived the original trilogy while Neo and Trinity both died.
So how does Neo come back? Warner Bros. is keeping tight-lipped on the subject, although even if his literal body is dead I suppose there could still be a simulation of him somewhere in the Matrix. Or the robots know CPR, I don’t know.
