Supernatural has been running for over 14 seasons now. It survived the transition of The WB into The CW. It’s lasted while stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles aged out of their 20s and into their 40s (well, in Ackles’ case, anyway), all the while finding new stories to tell about brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, who criss-cross the country in their Chevy Impala slaying monsters, meeting angels and demons, battling God…whatever needs doing, really.
It’s an impressive run, and it’s all coming to an end on May 18. Since the fans have had a lot of time to build up their expectations, the series finale has a lot to live up to, but one thing co-showrunner Andrew Dabb can at least promise is that the show won’t end on a cliffhanger.
“The ending is an ending,” Dabb told Michael Ausiello of TV Line. “It’s not a ‘to be continued.’” Yikes, can you imagine the outcry if the series finale was a glorified backdoor pilot for a new show or something? The fans would not be pleased.
It also sounds like this particular ending has been in the works for awhile, at least since the cast teased it last summer at San Diego Comic-Con. “The path to it has changed as we’ve kind of laid out our story, but the final, final moments of that episode have not changed,” said Dabb.
Finally, Dabb hinted that the ending, whatever it entails, “will have some lead up to it.” In fact, it’s not so much a final episode as it is “kind of a final arc,” which sounds appropriate given how long this show has been going on. After all, how can the complete a story that’s been running for over a decade with a single episode? You probably need a bit more to say everything that needs saying.
But there’s still some time left before we reach the finish line. We’re saving the few last new morsels of Supernatural while we can:
