Matt Reeves’ Batman movie is “raw,” “unsanitized”
By Dan Selcke
A lot of people have made Batman movies over the years, and they’ve all been pretty different. Christopher Nolan went with a very grounded, realistic approach to the Caped Crusader, Tim Burton brought his unique gothic styling to the table, and of course, we can’t forget the uber-campy stuff from the 1960s:
Anyone want more of that? Anyone?
Now, the world waits to see what director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will do with the character in The Batman, which stars Twilight’s Robert Pattinson in the lead role. Are we going back to realism? Maybe it’ll go macho grimdark, something like we got from Ben Affleck’s Batman in Batman v Superman? Or maybe it’s time to return to high camp?
Well, let’s listen to what cast member Peter Sarsgaard, who’s playing a new character named district attorney Gil Colson, had to say about it on SiriusXM radio:
To start, Sarsgaard would neither confirm nor deny rumors that “Gil Colson” is a front for the fact that he’s really playing Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, easily the most famous and crazy district attorney in Batman history. He also heaped praise on Reeves’ talents as a director, but the most interesting thing he said was probably that The Batman reminded him of late ’80s-early ’90s alternative rock band The Pixies. “It’s so raw in that way,” he said. “So that’s what I feel like about this. It’s not sanitized. It’s got a raw power to it, a raw emotionality.”
So you heard it here. The Batman will be a movie version of this:
Kay. Who’s in?
One thing we’re sure of with The Batman is that it’s packed with star. In addition to Pattinson and Sarsgaard, we’ve also got Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. The movie is scheduled for release on June 21, 2021.
