Actor Gugu Mbatha-Raw, looks set to join the cast of Loki, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series to air on Disney+, according to Deadline.

So far we’ve been pretty short of details about the show, especially when it comes to cast members. We know, of course, that Tom Hiddleston will be reprising his role as the god of mischief and trickery himself, Loki. It’s Loki’s show, and it would be pretty weird if the headliner wasn’t in it!

As for other cast members, Variety has confirmed that Owen Wilson, of all people, has joined the team. It also looks like British actor Sophia Di Martino, best known for her role in Yesterday, may be coming aboard.

And now comes Mbatha-Raw. She’s returning to work for Disney after taking on roles on A Wrinkle in Time and 2017’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake. More recently, she played Hannah Shoenfeld in the successful Apple TV+ drama, The Morning Show.

The upcoming show will follow Loki as he travels through time and intervenes in key moments throughout human history. Interestingly, Marvel President Kevin Feige previously told Bloomberg that Loki will tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. “I’m not sure we’ve actually acknowledged that before,” he said. “But it does.”

That said, the Doctor Strange sequel has been going through some behind-the-scenes shuffles lately, with director Scott Derrickson stepping down and Marvel reportedly targeting Sam Raimi to replace him. Is the tie-in still a go?

While we don’t have a set-in-stone release date for Loki, filming is currently underway in Atlanta, with a premiere eyed for sometime 2021. This would put it in the same release year as three MCU movies: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and an untitled Spider-Man movie. Sony recently announced an untitled Marvel movie set for 2021 too, and though details are sparse, and it’s unlikely to be a part of the MCU.

Brace for Phase 4.
