Disney to begin filming Rogue One prequel with Diego Luna this year!
By Corey Smith
Disney+ got off to a smashing start with the success of The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars show, but not the last. As we prepare for The Mandalorian season 2, Disney is making a show focused on the exploits of Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), whom fans met in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
“Yes, we are doing it,” Luna told Entertainment Tonight. “We are doing it this year. It’s happening, and I’m getting ready for it.” We’re in.
Still, while Luna is “really excited” for the series, he claims to know “very little” about what it has in store for fans. Whatever happens, he’s sure we’re in for a unique experience:
"It is a different approach because of the beauty and it’s how things happen. It’s not just what happens. It’s not the typical way of approaching a story. It’s about how things happen, which in fact, is the same that happened in Rogue One. You know the ending, but you don’t know how it happened, and we have that challenge in front of us again, which is exciting."
The Rogue One show is, obviously, a prequel — if you saw the movie, you’ll know why there’s no other choice. Sounds like we could have a Better Call Saul situation on our hands, but with Death Stars.
We kid, but the Cassian Andor series does sound exciting given the character’s history as a spy/assassin for the Rebellion during the early days of the Empire. Throw in Alan Tudyk as the sassy droid K-2SO, and we are so here for it. Hopefully, the series can walk the same line that Rogue One did, exploring morally grey characters and balancing out the intrigue with humor and adventure.
Luna gave no hint as to when we might see the series appear on Disney+, but we wouldn’t count on seeing it until early 2021 at least. Either way, things are happening!
