Maisie Williams: No, we didn’t film an alternate ending to Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones season 8 was far and away the most divisive season in the show’s run…possibly in any show’s run. From petitions to have the season re-written to cast members staunchly defending how it all ended, it felt for a while like the discussion would never end.

And it still hasn’t! One idea that’s been circulating for a while is that the production shot an alternate ending, something that gained traction after star Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) mentioned it at an event. “Well, we shot an alternative ending,” he said. “That was mostly for fun but I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell you about that. But it was fun.”

Shortly after Hivju went on record, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) threw a wet blanket on the whole idea, saying: “There was never an alternative ending.”

Now, Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) has weighed in. “We didn’t [film an alternate ending],” she told MetroUK. “It costs so much money and the schedule was way too tight. We were spending all the money on dragons.”

"I think people wish we did. But..we didn’t! So, that’s your lot!"

Short and to the point, just like a Stark.

As for what’s next for Williams, she’ll soon be headlining a new dark comedy show, Two Weeks To Live, coming to Sky and the streaming service NOW TV. Check out the trailer:

Williams plays Kim, who is trying to find her father’s killer some 15 years after his death. “I’m very excited to jump into something that was kind of the polar opposite of Game of Thrones,” she said. “And I had the best time doing it. They are very different shows.”

Two Weeks To Live debuts later this year.
