Outlander fans, this has been a tremendous week for us. Not only has season 5 officially kicked off, but we have some potentially exciting news to mull over: At the season 5 red carpet premiere, executive producer Ronald D. Moore spoke to Variety about the future of Outlander. Will there be spinoffs? “We are definitely talking about it,” he said, “there’s nothing official but we’re in conversations about it.”
We’ll take it. Talking can lead to doing, and at least the idea is out there in the universe.
This isn’t the first time the topic of a potential Outlander spinoff has come up. STARZ CEO Jeffrey Hirsch alluded to it during the premium network’s winter Television Critics Association panel. “We continue to talk on a regular basis about developing the storyline around Outlander,” he said. “It’s something that we are aware of. We want to continue to serve that audience with what we think are the best stories.”
The hope is that if there is a spinoff that it would be centered around fan-favorite character Lord John Grey. Not only do we all love him so, but Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has written books about this character separate from the main novel series.
His story would be an exciting and intriguing one to follow, and I’d love to know more about his feelings and thoughts about Jamie, with whom he is very much in love. There’s gotta be good material there.
Honestly, this world is so vast that there could be more than one spinoff, and each would be riveting in its own way. While we don’t have confirmation, or even any inkling, as to what might happen, it comforts me knowing that the execs are even toying with the idea of expanding. Here’s to hoping we hear something soon!
Speaking of Ronald D. Moore, did you know that he was the creator and executive producer of the 2004 revival of Battlestar Galactica? It ends up that Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail is going to be rebooting Galactica for NBC Universal’s upcoming streaming service, Peacock!
“Sam called me and was very gracious, he didn’t pitch me the story so I don’t know,” Moore said. “But he said his plans and he wasn’t going to re-start the show and recast it but he wanted to do something in the same universe. Sam’s amazing and I love Mr. Robot. I was like, you know, ‘You’re an amazing guy and amazing writer, go with god!'”
I’m glad this isn’t another run-of-the-mill reboot of a perfectly good television show. I would much rather see Katee Sackhoff kick butt as Starbuck than have the character re-re-imagined once again.
